DescriptionTechnical description: Brass. Tall upright wrap; valves separated in two clusters; bell section detachable by screwed joint. Music card-holder. With crooks (a) quarter coil for E♭, (b) one and three-quarter coils for D♭; identical style and details of ferrules. L1: @I{3-semitone valve. R1: @I{2-semitone valve. R2: @I{1-semitone valve. Valve type: 3 Stölzel valves with spring inside hollow stem; alignment by guide pin screwed through casing and slot in stem, this pin also locating fixed end of spring. Repair History: Inner slide of crook (a) does not fit instrument and appears to be a replacement. Possible original crook for D_ missing. Sounding length: minimum (in Eb) 2012; overall air column length of crooks: (a) 170, (b) 422. Bore: crook (a) at c 25mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 10.9; crook (b) at c 30mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 10.9; m.t.s. at c 172mm from mouthpiece receiver (in Eb), tuning slide bore 11.3; valve for L1 at c 417mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (3) 11.4; centre of 2 valve cluster for R1, R2 at c 789mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (1,2) 11.4; 1006mm from bell end, c 14.5; c 699mm from bell end, 20.5; 34mm from bell end, 112.5. B = 0.62. Bell cutoff = 700 Hz. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: crook internal tapers (a) 11.9 11.3, (b) 11.9 11.3; crook ligature fitting inner slide external diameters (a) 11.9, (b) 12.1; lengths (a) 37.0, (b) 37.3; crook receiver fitting (ligature) 12.2. Inscribed on bell "JEAN"; on both ferrules of screwed joint "1930". Decorative features: Ivory touchpieces, with knurled brass washer underneath. Guard on main bow. With original black wooden fitted case. The case has positions for two crooks and two mouthpieces. Usable pitch: Plays at A4 = 440 Hz in both Eb and Db. Purchased by lender with, probably formerly used with and possibly supplied by manufacturer with mouthpiece (3046); also purchased by lender with and possibly formerly used with mouthpiece (3047).
