DescriptionPungi, double clarinet with wind cap. Made of two tubes of cane (chanter and drone) inserted into a wind chamber and a elaborately turned wooden mouthpiece. The three sections are held together with wax at the joints. The mouthpiece consists of a wood blowpipe turned to have a series of decorative raised discs. Wind chamber is a hollowed coconut that has been smoothed on the exterior and painted black. The two tubes are stained a dark brown colour and held together at the distal end with metal wire (slightly rusted and discoloured). The melody tube or chanter has six fingerholes; the drone also has six fingerholes but these holes are filled with wax. The instrument is missing its reeds and is not functioning. The wax sealing the joints has cracked and the three parts can be separated. |
