Shakespeare, William (1598)

Edinburgh University Library has a fine collection of early editions of Shakespeare and of English drama generally. Three of the quartos are of such outstanding importance that they are classed as "iconic".
A pleasant conceited comedie called, Loues labors lost. London: Printed by W[illiam]. W[hite]. for Cutbert Burby, 1598. This is the original quarto edition of this play, and was the first of Shakespeare's published works to include his name on the title page. It is, however, termed 'newly corrected and augmented', suggesting that there may have been an earlier quarto which has been lost. This work is one of several Shakespeare quartos which were given to the University library by the poet William Drummond in 1626.
