Interview summary | Ian Fraser, aged 79 and originally from Glasgow, reflects on his working life with ICI. He joined the firm after university, and was initially based at Ardeer, in Ayrshire. He then moved to their plant at Welwyn Garden City and then to the new factory in Dumfries, in 1963. He describes in detail the extent and purpose of the ICI operations and talks about the various jobs he had during almost 30 years with the firm. This included working as Plant Manager and Training Manager. As well as talking about specific processes he also reflects on pay and conditions, change over time, industrial relations and provides interesting details about the connections between ICI and the local authority (ICI was based in Dumfries but rates were paid to the Stewartry). |
