Interview summary | Alex Inman, aged 71 and from Dumfries, reflects on his working life with ICI which spanned 38 years. After initial taining at Welwyn Garden City, he continued his training until the age of 21. He talks in detail about: the work he did at ICI; training; different parts of the industrial process; the technological change during his working life - from electronic valves in instruments through to the computerisation of the entire plant; staff structure; pay and conditions; Health & Safety; Union representation and the move to Dupont ownership. Alex tells a few work-place related anecdotes and reflects that ICI was a great company to work for. After the Dupont take-over he was offered a retirement package. He subsequently went on to work with adults with learning difficulties and describes this work as his true vocation and one which he has found tremendously rewarding. |
