Interview summary | Interview with Margaret McColm, aged 91, whose father was the dairyman at Mains of Airies Farm when it was the largest dairy farm in Wigtownshire - with 140 cows. She talks about going to Dhuloch school and says that her schooling stopped at 14 because it wasn't possible to get to the school and also she was needed to help at home. Her husband worked at Whiteleys where he was the grieve. The farm was known for breeding horses and Mr McColm and Mr Hunter (the owner of Whiteleys) showed horses and won prizes at many shows. Margaret talks about the horses being brought into Stranraer to parade and also the horses being transported by train to shows further afield. This included Clydesdale horses and breeding foals. Towards the end of the interview, Margaret talks about participation in agricultural shows which was a great interest for both her and her husband. They won many prizes over the years. |
