Interview summary | Biographical interview with John Dickenson (b. 1936, Kirkcudbright). John talks about his early life and family and his life-long interest in history and landscape. John's father worked for the Galloway Water Company and the family moved to Kendoon for his work, in 1936. John recalled how his early life and experience shaped his love of history and the outdoors. His father would take him to visit some of the older people who lived nearby and from those experiences he learned local stories and about the natural world. John talks about the archaeology of the hills around Polmaddie and about his experiences of walking these hills and exploring the local history of Robert the Bruce, Blind Harry and authors such as S R Crockett and the Reverend Dicks. He also speaks about the legend of Mary Timney, the last woman to be publicly hanged in Scotland, in 1862. He also talks about his time as a small-holder and about the role of music in his life. His mother was a musician and played and sang for local events. He also talks about Halloween and Christmas celebrations. |
