Interview summary | Initial interview track (DG2/3/1/1) with Winnie Johnstone, aged 66, about her early life at Auchenlarie farm, which her father bought when she was 4 years old. As well as a dairy the farm grew corn and kept pigs and Winnie talks about helping with chores before and after school. With a family of nine, everyone had to help out but she also says, with humour, that her brothers were less enthusiastic about working. She describes the milking process and collection. The farm was developed as a caravan park and Winnie notes that this was at a time when caravan holidays were becoming very popular. She missed the farm and was glad to return to farming when she married Eric. Second track (DG2/3/1/3) with Winnie Johnstone where she concentrates on the bed and breakfast business which her mother ran from the family home at Auchenlarie farm. Winnie talks about the work she did and recalls that her brothers were sent out to live in the bothy during the summer months. |
