Snail (Maquette)

CreatorDr. Louis Thomas Jérôme Auzoux
Date1850
DescriptionAnatomical model of a snail made by French naturalist Louis Thomas Jérôme Auzoux in the nineteenth-century. The piece stands out for the quality of the representation of the animal’s physiology, which is accessed by dismantling different pieces of the model. When the model was made, scientific disciplines like physiology and anatomy suffered from a lack of resources derived from the high cost of wax models and the scarcity of human bodies available for students to dissect. Dr. Auzoux turned to cheaper materials like papier-mâché, enabling students from all around Europe to access animal and human anatomical models.
