DescriptionThe botanical collections of the Natural History Museum of the University of Tartu trace their beginning back to 1802 and hold now more than 310,000 plant specimens. Among other rarities, they include the 53-sheet collection of Friedrich Simon Morgenstern (1727-1782), municipal doctor of the city of Magdeburg, Germany. Mainly medicinal herbs and decorative plants are arranged in the collection in accordance of month. Lower parts of plants are placed in printed decorative vases of varying size and shape. This style of mounting herbaria originates from the Netherlands; collections decorated with paper vases remained popular till the end of the 18th century.
