Description | James Wilson, Illustrations of zoology (Edinburgh: 1831), plate V. Wilson's work was inspired by the collections in the University's Museum of Natural History, superintended by his friend Professor Robert Jameson, which possessed a skull of a 'Red' orangutan sent from Borneo. According to the philosopher Pierre Gassendi, this creature "may be rendered an expert and tasteful performer both on the guitar and the flute!" Of course, orangutans do not live in Africa - the centre drawing is of a chimpanzee. |
