Description | The original photograph from which this was derived was a cyanotype. Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that gives a cyan-blue print, and which was popular in engineering. A simple and low-cost process it enabled the production of large-scale copies of work, referred to as blueprints. The Forth Bridge is famous for being one of the earliest cantilever bridges. The three gentlemen demonstrating the cantilever here are engineers Sir John Fowler, Kaichi Watanabe and Sir Benjamin Baker. This image was incorporated into £20 banknotes in 2007 to commemorate their engineering achievements. N.B. For reasons of continuity, this image was processed in black and white for the calendar. |
