Description | David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson, salted paper photographic print, c.1845. This early photograph is believed to show David Octavius Hill and a Miss Watson. The Churchyard has one of Scotland's finest collections of 17th century monuments; the one being examined commemorates Sir Hugh McCulloch of Pilton, who died in 1688. In the distance is the Martyr's Monument, commemorating a number of Covenanters (revolutionary Presbyterians). This is one of over 700 Hill and Adamson prints held by Edinburgh University Library, making the collection one of the largest in the world. |
