An engraving from first edition of Glisson's rare work on the digestive organs and internal tissues. Francis Glisson was educated first at Caius College Cambridge where he obtained the degrees of Batchelor of Arts (1621), Master of Arts (1624) and graduated Doctor of Medicine in 1634. He was elected a fellow of the College of Physicians of London in 1635, where he also lectured on anatomy. In 1636 Glisson was appointed regius professor of physic at the University of Cambridge, a post he held until his death in 1677. He was one of the original fellows of the Royal Society and occupied the post of president of the College of Physicians from 1667-1669.
