William Cole was educated at Gloucester Hall (now Worcester College), Oxford University where he obtained the degrees of Batchelor of Medicine (1660) and Doctor of Medicine (1666). In 1693 he was admitted a candidate, and then a year later, elected a fellow of the College of Physicians in London. During his lifetime Cole became well known and respected as a medical writer.
