Aldis, Charles (1775-1863), Surgeon; founder of Glandular Institute for the cure of cancer

Aldis studied at Guy's and Bartholomew's Hospitals in London. In 1797 or 1798 he was made surgeon to the sick and wounded prisoners of war at Norman Cross barracks in Huntingdonshire. In 1800 Aldis moved to Hertford where he introduced vaccination into three parishes despite opposition from doctors. Nevertheless, he began practising in London in 1802 and a year later became a member of the College of Surgeons. Aldis was surgeon to the New Finsbury Dispensary and founded a hospital called the Glandular Institution for the Cure of Cancer.
