| Description | After studying medicine at Edinburgh, Akenside practised in several towns in England and graduated 'doctor of physic' at Leiden University in Holland. By 1747 however he was penniless and had to be 'bailed out' by a friend. Yet he subsequently became a Fellow of the Royal Society of London (1753) and, in 1761, Physician to the Queen. |
