Description | Askew was a classical scholar and physician. He studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge where he obtained his degree in 1745. He then went abroad where he studied at Leiden in Germany and travelled extensively. He commenced practice at Cambridge in 1750 and afterwards established himself in London, where he was physician to St Bartholomew's and to Christ's Hospitals, and Registrar of the College of Physicians. However, Askew was better known as a classical scholar than as a physician. He helped to develop the book collector's taste for unusual manuscripts, rare editions and fine copies. He put together an extensive library of valuable books and manuscripts he collected from home and abroad. |
