Quarter length portrait of Buchanan, portrayed almost full face. He wears a black skull-cap and black costume with white collar and cuffs. He holds a scroll in his right had in front of him. This is probably not a painting from life but a traditional portrait of the early 17th century.
George Buchanan rendered service to Scotland as an educationist. He played a leading part in all schemes for the advancement of national education and the improvement of the Universities of Scotland. His wide experience of teaching in Continental Universities marked him out as the most competent of his contemporaries to place Scotland abreast of the most progressive Universities of Europe
