Description | Three-quarter length portrait of the professor, seated in a Louis Seize armchair set at an angle to the picture plane. He turns his head to the left. The scarlets, pinks and greys of his robes are beautifully set off by the warm grey-green of the background which is relieved only by a Tassie medallion of Adam Smith. The artist has reversed the direction of the Tassie profile portrait to prevent the eye from wandering out of the picture. Though a rather dated painting for its time, it is nonetheless a fine example of the artist's work. |
