Title | Henrietta Maria |
Description | long bust portrait of the Queen, facing slightly left. Her dark hair falls in rignlets and on the back of her head she has a small gold and pearl crown. She has over drop-pearl earrings, pearl necklace, and a brooch of a dark lozenge-shaped stone with three big pearl-drops. She wears a red robe with an ermine collar and lining and a dark dress with embroidery of gold greyish. inscribed in the top left corner are the letter 'M.R' The painting is probably a copy of a contemporary coronation portrait. It is not a flattering likeness, nor does it bear close resemblance to the Queen as shown in the Van Dyck portraits; but the costume is of the right date and confirms the inscription. This copy probably dates from the later 17th century. Henrietta Maria was the youngest daughter of Henry IV of France, and born at the Louvre. In 1625 she married Charles I. After the battle of Edgehill she fled to France; she and Charles never met again. After the Restoration she paid two visits to England, in 1660-1661 and 1662-1665. She died in August, 1669. |
