An adoring spaniel looks up from the carpet. on the mantlepiece of the fireplace is a reduced version of the recumbent stone horse, the original of which, a full-sized sculpture by sir John Steele, rested above the gate of the original Veterinary College in Clyde street. Behind the sitter's head is the wraithlike outline of a painting showing a horse and boy. This portrait is unusual in having an arched top.
