Title | Farrier's Shop |
Description | Depicted is a Farrier's Shop, before which the farrier is trimming the hind foot of an ox. This painting is a copy of Dujardin's A Smith Shoeing an Ox (Dulwich Picture Gallery). The subject matter of a tradesman's ox being shod by a blacksmith in the back streets of Rome is reminiscent of the Bambioccanti group of Dutch artists working in Rome with whom Dujardin is thought to have had contact during his first visit to Italy in 1652-5. The scene is typically Roman in the dress of the figures and in the crumbling architecture - as well as in the shadow cast by a low lying sun. |
