Description | Figure in bronze of the Florentine Boar. Il Porcellino (Italian "piglet") is the local Florentine nickname for the bronze fountain of a boar, made in in 1612, following a marble Italian copy of a Hellenistic marble original. The boar was immensely popular image for Grand Tourists and artists alike, bronze reductions were made throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The boar, open-mouthed, is half raising on his fore feet, his left haunch still resting on the ground. Resting on his hind legs his open mouth and long snout give him character. This reduction is suggested to be the product of the Susini workshop, as other almost identical boars from this workshop are known. |
