Description | This is a rare and high quality bronze reduced copy of the Medici vase. The original antique vase is marble and of monumental size, created in the 1st century, and can be found in the Uffizi. The vase was widely copied, and appeared in many prints in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It is a bell shaped crater and has a deep frieze carved with a mythological bas-relief that depicts a half-draped female figure Iphigenia seated below a statue of a goddess on a high plinth, restored as Diana, with heroic warriors on either side, perhaps Agamemnon and either Achilles or Odysseus standing to either side. Two fluted loop handles rise from satyrs' heads on either side of the acanthus-leaf carved base, and it stands on a gadrooned base on a low square plinth. |
