Bust length portrait of Davidson, facing quarter profile to the right with the left shoulder cut off, he gives the viewer a concentrated stare. The head is modelled in bright light which falls sharply against the white shirt collar. The lower half of the painting is taken up with a neutral area of dark blue enlivened by the silken magenta of the hood which frames the head and neck. With fine awareness of colour harmony the painter had set this, the most positive colour note, against a jade green plain background which gives way towards the edges of the painting to bare primed canvas. The fine grey hair of the sitter is well defined against the colour of the background. A suave and silken image. Signed 'Cowan Dobson 41' ' bottom right corner.
