Description | mainly flat landscape with exotic plants and the prisoner in the foreground, dressed in a black and white striped catsuit. This painting was made while Nolan was living in Sydney. It is one of the series concerned with Mrs Fraser and the convict Bracefell, a subject to which he returned in 1957. Mrs fraser survived the wreck of the 'Stirling Castle' on Fraser Island, North Queensland in 1836. She lived among the aborigines for six months until she was brought back to civilisation by an escaped convict, Bracefell. The legend is that she then treatened him with betrayal to the Governor, instead of interceding for the free pardon he deserved, unless he dissappeared from her life. |
