DescriptionThis division of the Collection includes zithers, lutes, citterns, guitars, harps, and related instruments numbering around one hundred and fifty objects in total. This group of instruments is of international importance, and allows a very rich display of early guitars and related instruments. Star items include a 9-course lute from around 1620, an arch-lute by Harz of Rome from 1665, a Sellas guitar from 1614 and a Pages guitar from 1813. The core of this division of the Collection was donated to the University by Mrs Anne Macaulay in 1977 and 1985. Other items have come from the Brackenbury Collection and the Appleby Collection.
