Description | Friends and former pupils of David Talbot Rice, CBE, 1903–1972, Watson Gordon Professor of Fine Arts in the University of Edinburgh 1934–1972, commemorated him by giving to the University works of art either from their own collections, or, in the case of practicing artists, examples of their own work. This idea was conceived by the late Dr Harold Fletcher, who remembered that when he bought picture by John Houston, Professor Rice said he wished he could have bought it for the University. Dr Fletcher gave this picture, and many friends and former pupils have followed suit. Altogether, some 20 oils and watercolours were donated by friends, colleagues and former students and these are displayed throughout the University. |
