DescriptionTechnical description: Brass. Valve outer slides enter valves directly, not having separately-made knuckles. Leadpipe enters 3rd valve casing at the right; 3rd valve loop leaves from 15° left of front and returns to 15° left of front; bellpipe exits 1st valve casing at the left. No water-key; with fitting for music card holder. Shank for B♭. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top-sprung with spring outside stem; alignment by key on piston. Repair History: Two patches on bell; shank not original; valve pistons copper-plated. Maker: Douglas and Son. Glasgow. Post 1860, probably c 1872. Overall size: 310; bell 120. Sounding length: shank overall air column length 86.4. Bore: shank at c 45mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 9.1; shank at distal end 9.1; instrument body at c 25mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) 9.8; m.t.s. at c 267mm from shank/crook receiver, tuning slide bore 11.6; v.t.s. (3,2,1) 11.6. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: Shank m.r.t. 9.6 9.2; shank external taper 11.4 12.2; shank/crook receiver taper 12.4 11.6. Inscribed on bell "DOUGLAS & SON, LTD / 36 Brunswick St. / Glasgow", also "Edin Corp. / T.S.S."; on shank receiver "13"; inscribed on mouthpiece receiver ferrule of shank "149". Mouthpipe stay loose. Two patches on bell; shank not original; valve pistons copper plated. Usable pitch: Plays at Old Philharmonic pitch.
