Anglo-Saxon charter (854 A.D)

We have a fine collection of over 3,000 charters - official documents recording land transactions - bequeathed by the great collector David Laing in 1878. The earliest is this Anglo-Saxon document dated 854 A.D, in which King Ethelwulf of Wessex grants twenty hides of land to the monks of St. Peter at Winchester. It is probably an 11th century copy, on vellum, but still among our earliest manuscripts.
