Description | The baroque guitar was the forerunner of the modern instrument, having five courses (pairs) of strings, and was popular from around 1600 to about 1750. The earlier main centres of manufacture were Paris and Italy, of which Venice was particularly important. This example has its curved back and sides made from thousands of small pieces of yew and maple arranged in a parquetry design, while the soundboard and neck are inlaid with ebony and ivory. From the Anne Macaulay Collection. |
